Most proxy mistakes aren’t about quality — they’re about fit. The same scraping job can block in hours on the wrong IP type, or quietly overpay for features it never needed.
There is no “best” proxy. There’s only the one that survives what your target throws at it, sees the world from the geography you need, moves fast enough, and costs what the job is actually worth. Residential, static ISP, datacenter, and mobile proxies differ on exactly those four things: unblock strength, geo accuracy, speed, and cost.
This post matches each to a real scenario, then collapses the logic into one decision matrix and a four-step flow you can run in minutes.
| What you’re doing | Reach for | Fallback | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| E-commerce price / stock monitoring | Residential | Static ISP | Real-user view dodges geo-personalized pricing; pay by usage |
| SERP / SEO rank tracking | Residential | Static ISP | Search engines flag datacenter ranges fast; real IPs hold up |
| Ad verification | Residential | Mobile | Reproduce the ad from a specific market’s viewpoint |
| High-volume, low-defense scraping | Datacenter | — | Per-IP + unlimited bandwidth = highest throughput, lowest unit cost |
| Mobile apps & multi-account social | Mobile | Residential | Carrier-grade exit looks like a real phone; keeps accounts separate |
Retailers show different prices and availability by region and by “new visitor,” and datacenter ranges often get served a fallback price — or blocked. Go residential to see what a real user sees; when you watch the same SKU for hours without wanting your exit identity to jump, put a static ISP IP in front of it. Start by pinning a sticky session to the target region for roughly 15–30 minutes, target by country/city, and pace requests like a real browser. Watch for suspiciously uniform prices, fallback pages, and 403/429 — see the price-monitoring solution.
Google and Bing read datacenter ranges instantly; a burst of queries earns CAPTCHAs and degraded results. Go residential with geo-targeting to capture “the rank a specific device in a specific place actually sees.” Start with rotation on every request, sticky off or very short, throttle per engine, and back off the moment you’re blocked. Tell-tale signs: a CAPTCHA page, a sudden drop in result count, 429 — see SERP monitoring and the SERP API.
To check whether an ad actually ran in a market, where it ran, and whether the creative was right, you have to view it as a local user. Go residential for the geography; add mobile proxies for mobile-only placements. Start by fixing the exit to the target market with low rotation, so the same viewpoint is reproducible, and capture a screenshot of every visit — see the ad-verification solution.
Open APIs, static pages, lightly defended sites — where you need throughput and cost control. Go datacenter: per-IP billing, unlimited bandwidth, and the fastest responses. Start with a rotating pool that auto-drops failed IPs, watch your 403 rate and IP reuse ceiling, and the moment failures climb, switch to residential instead of grinding against a wall.
Some mobile apps and social platforms only trust real carrier exits, and multi-account work needs isolated environments. Go mobile for the carrier-grade signal; residential is the fallback. Keep it one fixed exit per account, match the session length to the login cycle, and never let two accounts share an exit.
Scores are a qualitative read of (1) each network’s inherent nature — real residential, static ISP range, datacenter ASN, carrier exit — and (2) published specs for coverage, billing, and uptime. It’s a starting point, not a third-party benchmark; confirm on your own target.
| Factor | Residential | Static ISP | Datacenter | Mobile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unblock strength | High ★★★★ | Med-high ★★★☆ | Low ★★ | Highest ★★★★★ |
| Geo accuracy | High ★★★★ (to city) | Med ★★★ | Med ★★★ (country-level fine) | Med ★★★ (30+ countries) |
| Speed / latency | Med ★★★ | High ★★★★ | Highest ★★★★★ | Med-low ★★ |
| Unit cost | Med (from $0.65/GB) | Med-high (from $0.75/IP) | Lowest (from $0.75/IP, unlimited BW) | Highest (from $2.20/GB) |
| Concurrency / scale | High (100M+ pool) | Med (IP-limited) | High (1M+, cheap) | Low (small, pricey) |
| IP reputation | High | High | Low (ASN flagged) | Highest |
| Sticky-session stability | Med | Highest (fixed IP) | High | Med |
| Setup effort | Low–med | Low | Low | Med–high |
| Best for | E-commerce / SERP / ad verification | Long-lived residential identity | High-volume low-cost scraping | Mobile apps / multi-account |
Walk 1→4 and take the first match. If two apply (you need both stability and a residential profile), fall back to the matrix and weigh “sticky-session stability” against “unblock strength.”
Rotating vs sticky sessions. Rotation changes IP often — good for volume and spreading load off any one IP. Sticky keeps one IP for a window — good for logins, carts, and multi-step flows. Residential usually switches between both.
Static ISP vs residential vs datacenter. Datacenter is cheapest and fastest but ASN-flagged. Residential gives you a huge, flexible pool of real IPs. Static ISP sits between them — a residential profile with one long-lived, fixed IP.
For per-GB billing, a rough model: monthly cost ≈ requests × payload-per-request × retry factor ÷ 1 GB × unit price. For per-IP billing, cost ≈ concurrent IPs × unit price, largely independent of traffic.
Example — 500,000 requests/day at ~30 KB each with a 1.1 retry factor lands near 15–18 GB/day:
| Plan | Billing | From | In this example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential | Per GB | $0.65/GB | ≈\$10–12 / day |
| Datacenter | Per IP, unlimited BW | $0.75/IP | Scales with concurrent IPs; a small fixed pool is often cheaper |
| Static ISP | Per IP | $0.75/IP | For a handful of long-lived IPs |
| Mobile | Per GB | $2.20/GB | ~3–4× residential for the same traffic |
All prices are published starting rates, tiered by volume — see the pricing page. The example excludes packages, minimums, and the cost of blocks and retries.
Treating the priciest option as the best. Buying datacenter for geography-sensitive work and getting polluted by personalized pricing. Grinding datacenter ranges against hard targets until failures eat your savings. Holding sticky sessions too long until hit rates drop. Choosing on one dimension instead of the unblock–cost–stability combination.
Is residential always better than datacenter? No. Residential wins on defended targets and real-user views; datacenter wins on volume, speed, and cost against weak targets.
Do I need mobile proxies just for price monitoring? Usually not — residential is enough. Add mobile only when the target trusts real carrier exits.
How are static ISP and residential different? Static ISP is a residential-profile IP that stays fixed, so it’s built for long-lived sessions. Residential rotates across a huge pool of real IPs.
How much traffic should I buy? Estimate GB as requests × average payload × retry factor (see the model above), or pick per-IP datacenter / static ISP based on concurrency instead.
Run the four-step flow to name the type, check it against the matrix, then start a free trial: validate unblock rate, data cleanliness, and unit cost on your real target at low volume before you scale.
